THE ATTENTION RESET — PART 2 OF 4

You sit down to do something important.
You open the document.
Write the first sentence.

Then—

A message arrives.
It will only take 30 seconds to answer.
You reply, return to the document and try to remember where the thought was going.

Then an email appears.
A notification.

Something else you should quickly check.

By the end of the day, you’ve been busy for hours—
but barely spent ten uninterrupted minutes with anything that mattered.

THAT ISN’T LAZINESS.

IT’S FRAGMENTATION.

Microsoft’s 2025 Work Trend Index found that its most heavily notified group of workers received a meeting, email or message interruption roughly every two minutes during core working hours.

Nearly half of the people surveyed said their work felt chaotic and fragmented.

The interruption itself may last only a few seconds.

But returning requires you to reconstruct the thought, remember the intention and find your mental position again.

And we keep calling this a personal focus problem.

YOU CANNOT GO DEEP

WHILE REMAINING ENDLESSLY REACHABLE.

Focus isn’t only the ability to concentrate.

It’s the ability to protect something long enough for depth to appear.

If every person, platform and notification can reach you at any moment, your attention never truly belongs to the task in front of you.

Availability has become the default.
But it doesn’t have to remain yours.

Your Action Spark:

Create one 45-minute unreachable block today.

Before you begin:

  • Choose one visible outcome

  • Put your phone in another room

  • Close your inbox and messages

  • Keep only the tool you need open

  • Write distracting thoughts down instead of acting on them

Your goal isn’t to complete everything.
Your goal is to stay with one thing until the time ends.

No checking.
No quick replies.
No proving that everyone can always reach you.

Because your best work doesn’t need more pressure.

It needs protection.

P.S. Thank you for spending a few minutes with me today. Your attention and trust are what make this newsletter worth creating.

P.P.S. On Friday, we’ll look at why switching and fast-forwarding through everything may be making you more bored—not less.
