THE ALIVENESS SERIES — PART 3 OF 4
Not every challenge is good for you.
Some things are difficult because they’re helping you grow.
Others are difficult because they’re chaotic, misaligned or slowly pulling you away from yourself.
From the outside, they can look exactly the same.
Both require effort.
Both create resistance.
Both can make you tired.
But confusing them leads to two costly mistakes:
You abandon something meaningful because it feels uncomfortable.
Or you stay in something destructive because you believe:
“If it’s hard, it must be making me stronger.”
DIFFICULT DOESN’T AUTOMATICALLY MEAN VALUABLE.
So how can you tell the difference?
Don’t judge the challenge only by how you feel before doing it.
Before an honest conversation, you may feel anxious.
Before creating something new, you may want to procrastinate.
Before doing what matters, resistance often gets louder.
And don’t judge it only by how you feel during it.
Growth can be uncomfortable while it’s happening.
Instead, pay attention to what remains afterward.
Ask yourself:
Do I feel tired—but clearer?
Did this increase my self-respect?
Do I feel more connected to who I want to become?
A meaningful challenge may use your energy—
but it often gives something back.
Clarity.
Confidence.
Pride.
A sense of movement.
A draining challenge feels different.
Even after you recover, you repeatedly feel smaller.
Foggy.
Disconnected.
Empty.
DON’T ONLY ASK: “HOW HARD WAS IT?”
ASK: “WHO AM I AFTER I DO IT?”
That’s the Energy-After Test.
For the rest of today, place one symbol beside each meaningful activity:
+ if it left you feeling more alive
– if it left you feeling emptier
= if it felt neutral
Don’t change your entire life based on one difficult afternoon.
Look for the pattern.
Because your energy isn’t just something to manage.
It’s information.
It can show you what deserves a larger place in your life—and what may have occupied one for too long.
Tomorrow, we’ll use that information to build something practical:
A week you don’t constantly need to escape from.
Until then:
What difficult thing almost always gives something back to you?
Hit reply and tell me.
I read every single one.
