I didn’t plan to check it again.
But I did, and that’s the part that bothered me.

I was standing in line at a café, waiting for my coffee.
Half-aware of the room.
Half watching the barista mess up someone else’s order.

Nothing urgent.
Nothing I needed.

My phone was in my hand for no real reason.

And then my thumb moved.

Same app as always.
Opened without hesitation.

I noticed it mid-motion- already inside the app
before I had a single thought about why I was there.

That split second stayed with me.

Not because of the app.
Because I never chose it.

Later that day, I mentioned it to a friend.
He didn’t even look surprised.

He said,
“Yeah… sometimes I don’t remember opening half the things I check.”

That hit harder than it should have.

Because once you see it,
you start noticing it everywhere.

You don’t decide to check.
You just realize you’re already doing it.

And that’s when it gets uncomfortable.

Because if you didn’t choose it…
who did?

They feel automatic.
Efficient.
Harmless.

That’s why trying to “have more discipline” feels exhausting.

What surprised me was this:

The moment you catch the pattern -even once-
it changes how it works.

Not dramatically.
Quietly.

A gap appears.

And in that gap,
you’re back in control.
