THE SUBCONSCIOUS RESET — PART 3 OF 4
Don’t overthink.
Don’t be nervous.
Don’t waste today.
Don’t mess this up.
They sound like instructions.
But none of them tells you what to actually do.
To understand “don’t overthink,” your mind first has to bring overthinking into your awareness.
Then it starts checking:
Am I overthinking now?
What about now?
Did I do it again?
The very thing you wanted to escape remains at the center of your attention.
“DON’T” CAN CREATE A BOUNDARY.
BUT IT DOESN’T CREATE A DIRECTION.
The problem isn’t that your mind cannot understand the word don’t.
It can.
The problem is that avoiding something still leaves an important question unanswered:
What do I move toward instead?
“Don’t be nervous” becomes:
“Slow your breathing and say the first sentence.”
“Don’t procrastinate” becomes:
“Open the document and work for ten minutes.”
“Don’t scroll tonight” becomes:
“Leave your phone in another room after 9 PM.”
“Don’t fail” becomes:
“Focus on the next action you can control.”
Feel the difference?
One instruction keeps your attention trapped inside the problem.
The other gives your energy somewhere to go.
YOUR MIND NEEDS A TARGET.
Not a vague command to avoid discomfort.
Not another battle against yourself.
A clear image of the behavior, feeling, or decision you want to practice.
Because the patterns you repeatedly move toward gradually become easier to access.
Your Action Spark:
Catch one negative instruction you regularly give yourself.
Then ask:
“What do I want to choose instead?”
Rewrite it as one specific action:
When __________ happens, I will __________.
Don’t spend today fighting the version of yourself you want to leave behind.
Give the next version of you a direction to follow.
P.S. Thank you for spending a few minutes with me today. Your attention and trust are what make this newsletter worth creating.
P.P.S. On Saturday, we’ll look at why imagining the perfect outcome is not enough—and what to mentally rehearse instead.
